Make-up artists are designing and applying make-up on clients, including actors, models and performing artists and may work for beauty salons, beauty retail stores or entertainment production companies or be self-employed.

Even though a make-up artist does not have to have any formal education such as a high school diploma, or a a special make up professional license such as a cosmetologist license, it is recommended that they should have cosmetology or esthetics training and, if required by an employer, a cosmetologist license.

As mentioned, make-up artists are not required to be licensed or certified; however, some employers prefer to hire make-up artists with a cosmetology license. That means that if you are a self employed make-up artist, you will just need to get BUSINESS licensing as opposed to professional license such as a cosmetologist license.

Business legal requirements and tax rules require new make-up businessto select a business entity such as a sole owner/proprietor, partnership, LLC or corporation.
