An independent contractor is a self employed business person that receives more than $600 per year from anyone of his or her clients.
IRS rule: The client must issue a 1099 form to the independent contractor and the independent contractor must have a federal tax ID. However, even sole owners may obtain a federal ID and use it as a business tax ID instead of using their own social security number as a business tax ID number.
However, all other licenses that apply to sole proprietors as discussed here are requited regardless of getting a federal tax ID number.


If you are thinking of hiring help, you will need a state employer ID and an IRS number employer ID. I.e., a AL Federal Tax Id Number ($29)  and a(n) AL  State Employer Tax Number  


Instead of filing a fictitious business name DBA Filing (about $49 plus state and legal newspaper publication fees) in Jasper, Incorporate in AL  or form a(n) AL LLC

If you sell food or any items to raise money for your ministry, you will also need a seller's permit because selling food or merchandise requires that you collect tax. Collecting sales tax requires that you hold a seller's permit.

Furthermore, wanting to buy wholesale requires a seller's permit as well. That said, you may be exempt from having to collect sales tax as a nonprofit.

Answer: You can obtain a 501c3 for religious organizations such as ministries and churches.

It will be a nonprofit corporation that you need, and you can obtain it here on this site. The price starts at $49 and includes all documents such as the corporate bylaws and the articles of organization.

You will also need a federal tax ID number for your nonprofit. After we file your Ministry nonprofit certificate of incorporation, you will need to use it with your nonprofit federal tax ID number to obtain tax exemptions from state and federal agencies.
