1. Certification

In most states, you need to obtain a state certification for your pest control extermination specialty. There are certification pest control licenses for agricultural, commercial and other applications, but the fee ranges from $50 to $150 or more depending on your state.

For example, in California, you will need a special state pest control applicator permit that is issued by the state after you take a short exam. In other states, you need to pass a course and a test as well have at least 50 hours of experience in exterminating pests. Other states also require that you have some education, such as a high school diploma.

It usually takes about 3 months to receive your certification license.

2. Business Licensing
After you obtain that permit, you will need licensing like any other business. So, you will need a general Business License, a Seller's Permit to obtain your pesticides wholesale, and a registration of your business name.

For instance, after the Texas fertilizer plant bomb blast in April 2022, Andre, a plant pest control applicator worker, loses his job and decides to start a residential pest control extermination service and starts doing business as (DBA) "Have Pests?
