You can use a DBA as a sole proprietor to open a business bank account and
bring law suits against others as well as receive money using a name other than your family legal name.
Registrations You Need to Legally Start Your Business

All businesses must obtain:

•1. A business License and Name DBA.

•2. All retailers and wholesalers of taxable items must obtain a Sales State Tax ID Number, also called a resellers, resale or wholesale number ID.

•3. All employers, must get a federal tax employer number and a state employer number ID.

•4. Optionally, to protect your personal assets, such as your home or automobile, from business related lawsuits or creditors, by , forming an LLC or Incorporating.

In some states, you can use more than one business name or the same business can operate under the same DBA Business Name. There is no protection or rights acquired for the use of a dba solely under a “doing business as” name.
